Mainstreaming the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda has been a golden thread running through all of Ireland’s work on the Council.

Ireland chaired the informal expert group on WPS and led the first WPS field visit, to Lebanon. Ireland also pushed for the inclusion of women civil society voices at the Council table.

Ireland pioneered monthly commitments on women, peace and security, which have since been adopted by 14 Council Members.

These commitments aim to close the gap between rhetoric and reality, and to make WPS a concrete, tangible and ongoing priority for Security Council Presidencies.
