Shining a light on the protection of journalists
An example of where Ireland made a real difference during its term on the UN Security Council 2021-2022.

When Shireen Abu Akleh was killed in Jenin, Ireland decided to shine a light on the issue of the protection of journalists.
We convened an Arria formula meeting within a few days of her death, allowing the Council to be briefed by members of the media about the dangers they face every day in the field.
Al Jazeera spoke out on Shireen’s killing, along with other briefers, who also highlighted the killing of Pierre Zakrzewski in Ukraine, and the many other journalists killed in conflict zones around the world.
Ireland drew global attention to the targeting of journalists in this way, and to the active responsibility of the Security Council to protect them.
