Pushing the envelope on climate and security

An example of where Ireland made a real difference during its term on the UN Security Council 2021-2022.

The effects of climate change are being felt across the globe and are exacerbating instability in some of the world’s most vulnerable countries.

During our term, Ireland pushed the Council to better understand the serious impact of the climate crisis on international security and include this issue in relevant resolutions.

Working with Niger, Ireland chaired the Council’s expert group on climate and security in 2021, and led negotiations on what would have been the Council’s first ever resolution on climate and security.
