Since the Taliban takeover of Kabul, Ireland has pushed for accountability for the actions of the Taliban.

Our leadership on Afghanistan, including in ensuring that the mandate for the UN mission in Afghanistan had a strong human rights and women’s participation perspective, was directly informed by the courageous activism of these and many other Afghan women.

We also maintained constant contact with Afghan women leaders on what they wanted to see from Council engagement.

Ireland blocked the rollover of an exemption to the regime that previously allowed sanctioned Taliban leaders to travel freely: if Afghan women cannot travel, neither should the Taliban.
