Freedom and democracy

The US has been a steadfast partner throughout the search for peace in Ireland. The President’s visit will be a chance to celebrate and to say thanks for its indispensable contribution.

Over many years, Ireland and the United States have enjoyed the closest of friendships, built on deep historic ties and a shared commitment to the fundamental values of freedom and democracy.

Shared values

The modern relationship between Ireland and the USA embraces these enduring values:

  • People – the ever-changing and dynamic connections of family, friends and culture.
  • Peace – the US has walked every step of the journey towards peace and reconciliation in Ireland with us. It is still by our side as we work to ensure that every person on the island reaps the benefits of a lasting peace.
  • Prosperity – the long-standing investment of US companies in Ireland is increasingly mirrored by Irish companies investing and creating jobs in the US, growing each other’s economic prosperity.
