A Vibrant Cultural Heritage

We may be a small country, but we’re very proud of the huge wealth of creative talent we’ve unleashed upon the world.

You’ll know of U2, Saoirse Ronan and Riverdance, but from music and art to theatre and literature, Ireland is teeming with creativity and culture.

Our Creative Ireland Programme plays a very important role in nurturing creative talent and supporting our rich cultural heritage. The five-year culture-based programme is designed to promote individual, community and national well-being through participation in creative activity and is administered by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. This programme is wide-reaching and diverse, with an amazing array of festivals, events and initiatives running in every county. If you visit Ireland or come to live here, you’ll reap the benefits of our investment in the arts. With something to suit every taste and interest, you’ll be entertained, enthralled and educated by all that’s on offer.

Here are three initiatives to give you a flavour of the diversity of the organisations supported by Creative Ireland.

If You Fancy Running Away with the Circus

If you’ve ever yearned to juggle, plate-spin, walk the trapeze or unicycle, Creative Ireland can make your dreams come true. It supports Galway Community Circus, an organisation that enables people of all ages and abilities to develop an array of circus arts skills through weekly classes, workshops and outreach programmes. So what are you waiting for? Get up on that high wire!

Arming People with Words

Unfortunately, not everyone is given the opportunity when growing up to discover and harness the power of their own imagination and creative writing skills. Fighting Words does just that, enabling children, young people and adults from a wide range of backgrounds to discover their own unique voice through the creative practice of writing and storytelling.

Why Not Get Animated in Kilkenny?

Kilkenny Animated rocked into town back in February, and it’s the new kid on the block in the panoply of Irish festivals. It celebrates cartoons, animation and illustration, so if that’s your bag, this is the festival for you. Hosted by Academy Award-nominated studio Cartoon Saloon, this innovative festival is a global first in bringing together diverse visual storytelling aspects purely for public enjoyment.
