Michaela O’Shaughnessy: Big Apple Blogger
What do biomedical science and blogging have in common? The answer is not a lot, but it was studying at NUI Galway by day and starting her own lifestyle blog by night that took Irish blogger Michaela O’Shaughnessy off to the Big Apple to work for Teen Vogue.
When the 25-year-old realised, near the end of her degree studies, that it was business and marketing she was more interested in than biomedicine, post-graduate studies in business seemed like the next logical step. And it’s just as well, as Michaela’s marketing savvy coupled with her hugely-followed lifestyle and fashion blog, Life of a Lady Bear, was the winning combination that first saw her hired by two iconic American brands in New York City.
Initially moving to New York with a marketing career in mind, recruiters soon saw the blog as an online CV of sorts and snapped the Galway girl up for a social media role with MTV. Not long after, Michaela landed an even more prestigious position, that of social media producer for Teen Vogue. Chances are when the magazine’s followers are enjoying behind-the-scenes access at the Met Gala or New York Fashion Week, O’Shaughnessy’s the person at the helm as she manages the brand’s Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook Live channels.
With the digital industry a realm in which the combination of personality and online nous is a force to be reckoned with, this Irish trailblazer is creatively and successfully navigating today’s 24-hour content-consuming culture.
