Irish Aid is the Government of Ireland’s development cooperation programme. The programme works with partners around the world to tackle poverty, hunger and humanitarian need in over 130 countries.

Ireland believes in creating a more equal, peaceful and sustainable world. We support long-term development programmes to help bring about positive change in the lives of people around the world. We also fund humanitarian relief to provide targeted aid to people experiencing crisis.

Our work contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is focused on reaching those furthest behind first. The work of Irish Aid is guided by A Better World, Ireland’s policy for international development.

Furthest behind first

Ireland’s development programme has long been recognised for its focus on “the poorest of the poor”. We believe development is sustainable only if it is inclusive.

Gender equality

Ireland believes in a world with universal respect for human rights. We know this can be achieved only through gender equality. That is why gender equality is at the heart of Ireland’s development cooperation.

Climate change

Climate change affects everyone, but not equally. We work to support some of the most vulnerable people in the world to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Strengthening governance

Food and nutrition

The right to food and adequate nutrition is one of the most fundamental of all human rights. The fight against hunger is central to all Irish Aid’s work.
