Secretary General to the Government and Secretary General of the Department of the Taoiseach

Martin Fraser has served as Secretary General to the Government and Secretary General of the Department of the Taoiseach since 2011. He joined the Department of the Taoiseach in 1999, having served in the Department of Social Welfare, in the Department of Foreign Affairs and in the Department of Agriculture and Food.

From 2004, he served as Assistant Secretary with responsibility for Northern Ireland, British-Irish and Ireland-US relations, and from 2009 also as Assistant Secretary with responsibility for Economic & Social Policy and Corporate Affairs.

In his current role, he has been closely involved in the Irish Government’s response to the global economic crisis, Brexit, the Covid-19 pandemic and most recently the war in Ukraine. He has also worked on recent social and constitutional reforms in Ireland, on the Decade of Centenaries commemorative programme, and on important national policy priorities including housing, public service reform and climate action.

He is Chair of the Civil Service Management Board and the National Economic & Social Council.

He will step down from his current role in May, prior to taking up appointment as Irish Ambassador to the UK later this year.
