Irish Times EU50 Debate

The motion for the debate was: "This House Believes that it is time for the citizens of the European Union to directly and democratically elect the President of the European Commission".

As part of EU50, the Department of Foreign Affairs supported the Irish Times Debate Final 2023 with an EU50 theme.

Ailbhe Noonan and Gavin Dowd representing the Solicitors’ Apprentice Debating Society of Ireland were crowned Team Winners while Oliver McKenna representing Munster Technological University was crowned Individual Winner at last night’s sensational debate.

The motion for the debate was: "This House Believes that it is time for the citizens of the European Union to directly and democratically elect the President of the European Commission".

The judging panel included Irish Times editor Ruadhán Mac Cormaic; Prof Brent Northup, chair of communications, Carroll College; and former Irish Times Debate winners Bernadette Quigley, Daniel Gilligan and Chikemka Abuchi-Ogbonda.
