Bloomsday in Latvia

Bloomsday Bike Ride
16 June at 4pm, Riga
To celebrate Bloomsday and the 100th anniversary of Ulysses by James Joyce, the Embassy is organising the first Bloomsday Bike Ride and Picnic in Riga, with special readings from "Ulysses" and other works en route by Guna Zariņa (in Latvian) and Alexandra Conlon (in English).
We will hear excerpts from works by: James Joyce, Claire Keegan, Anna Auziņa, Doireann Ní Ghríofa, Silvija Brice, Sinéad Gleeson, Ieva Melgalve and Sara Baume.
The ride is organised in cooperation with Latvijas Veclaiku divriteņu klubs and will be led by urban and tourism researcher, writer and critic Mārtiņš Eņģelis.
Dress code: tweed; early 20th century style costumes e.g. ruffled blouses, long skirts and shawls/ summer dress with a straw hat for women, a tweed or linen suit, trousers with a shirt and braces for men.
This is also our third event in the series "Women and Literature" by the Embassy of Ireland and Literature Ireland, with support of Robert's Books and the National Library of Latvia.
Screening of documentary “100 Years of Ulysses”
16 June at 7.30pm, Robert’s Books, Riga
To mark Bloomsday and the centenary since the publication of "Ulysses" by James Joyce, the Embassy is hosting a special screening of the documentary "100 Years of Ulysses" at Robert's Books.
We will also have short readings from "Ulysses" and other works by Irish writers presented by Irish actress Alexandra Conlon before and after the screening.
Exhibition “International Joyce” at the National Library of Latvia
16 June – 15 July, exhibition space “Orangerie”
The exhibition tells the story of the Irish writer James Joyce (1882-1941), one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. International in his vision and impact, but always intellectually rooted in his native city of Dublin, Joyce could be said to represent the spirit of modern Ireland.
