Africa Day at Royal Hospital Kilmainham

A day of music, dance and culture to celebrate Africa, and Ireland’s growing links with Africa. The event will take place at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham on Sunday, 21 May, between 11am-6pm.

The Royal Hospital Kilmainham is an historic venue located very close to Dublin city centre.

There are two entrances: one on Military Road (close to Heuston Station), and another in Kilmainham village (opposite Kilmainham Gaol). Eircode: D08 FW31

This is an open and free event so no need to book tickets. Just turn up on the day!

No. There will be no car parking at the venue. Attendees are encouraged to use public transport, cycle or walk.

You can easily access the Royal Hospital Kilmainham by bus, train or Luas.

By bus: The following buses can drop you at Heuston Station, which is just a five minute walk to the venue via Military Road:

• 26 from Merrion Square
• 51 from Aston Quay
• 90 Dart Feeder Bus from Connolly and Tara Street stations.

There are also a number of buses to St. James’s Hospital / James’s Street, which is a five minute walk from the venue via steps to Bow Lane onto Irwin Street and Military Road:

• 123 from O’Connell Street/Dame Street
• 13 from O’Connell Street / Thomas Street
• G1 from Wellington Quay
• G2 from Wellington Quay.

By Luas: Take the Red Line to Heuston Station, which is just a five minute walk to the venue via Military Road.

By train: The venue is just a five minute walk from Heuston Station via Military Road.

Yes, bike parking will be provided at the venue.

We have a fantastic line-up of musicians, dancers and spoken word artists throughout the day.

The main stage will open at 12pm, with acts performing until 5pm.

There will also be a dance tent with regular performances throughout the day, as well as spoken word available in the historic courtyard.

Our cultural village is now completely booked out so we cannot accept new applications.

Yes, food traders will be on site to cater throughout the day.

This is an alcohol-free event and no alcoholic drinks will be permitted on site.

Yes, the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), located on the grounds of the Royal Hospital, will be open throughout the day.
